Court dismisses appeal of Uighurs detained at Guantanamo Bay

March 1st, 2010 · Homeland Security, National Security, Supreme Court, War on Terrorism

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a major separation of powers case that would have determined what rights judges have to free detainees at Guantanamo Bay who have been found not to be enemy combatants.

The justices, without recorded dissent, agreed with the Obama administration that changed circumstances meant that the challenge brought by a group of Chinese Muslims known as Uighurs was not ripe for the court’s consideration.

At the same time, the justices wiped out a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that had been challenged by attorneys for the detainees. The ruling said that the judicial branch had no power to release into the United States detainees who had been cleared of wrongdoing who cannot be returned to their home countries for fear of persecution.

Rashad Hussain, a Muslim and new U.S. envoy, is bridge between two worlds

March 1st, 2010 · Corruption, Deception, Ethics, Obama's Scheme, Selling Out the US, Treason

By Scott Wilson – Monday, March 1, 2010

Rashad Hussain, President Obama‘s new special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference, was an avid high school debater in Plano, Tex., where he grew up.

His debate partner and best friend was a classmate named Josh Goldberg, meaning that at the end of many tournaments, the judge would announce “Goldberg-Hussain” as the cultural odd couple who had won the argument. “People got a kick out of it,” Hussain said in a recent interview. “We joked that one day we would have the solution to the peace process.” The two remain close friends.

In his new position, Hussain, who is both a Koran scholar and an ardent North Carolina Tar Heels basketball fan, will be responsible for helping to bridge another cultural divide — the one in U.S. relations with Muslims inside and outside the nation’s borders.

Since taking office, Obama has adopted an approach to broaden the ways in which the United States engages the Islamic world, moving from a policy focused mostly on counterterrorism to one that includes partnerships with Muslim countries and communities in education, health, science and commerce.

White House social secretary Desiree Rogers resigns

March 1st, 2010 · Non-Transparency, Obama's Scheme

By Michael D. Shear and Jason Horowitz Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, February 27, 2010; 2:00 PM

White House social secretary Desirée Rogers, a friend of President Obama’s from Chicago, is leaving her job to return to the private sector, the White House announced Friday.

Rogers’s tenure as the top party and events planner for the administration was marred by the Salahi gate-crashing incident, in which a Virginia couple managed to enter the White House grounds during Obama’s first state dinner in November.

Although a senior administration official said the incident proved decisive for her tenure, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the decision to leave was her own.

Rep. Rangel’s trips broke congressional gift rules, panel says

March 1st, 2010 · Corruption, Democrats, Non-Transparency, Tax Dollars

By Paul Kane Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, February 26, 2010

Rep. Charles B. Rangel broke congressional gift rules by accepting trips to Caribbean conferences that were financed by corporate interests, the House ethics committee said Thursday.

While the panel did not find that the New York Democrat, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, knew about the corporate backing for the trips in 2007 and 2008, it concluded that members of his staff were aware and that he was therefore responsible. The committee said its report was intended to “serve as a public admonishment” of Rangel, and it ordered him to repay costs of the trips.

“They’re saying that my staff — at least two members — did know [about the financing], and I should have known, and I’m being admonished for that,” Rangel said before the report was released.

Obama may compromise on consumer agency to pass financial regulation

By David Cho and Brady Dennis Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, February 25, 2010

The Obama administration is no longer insisting on the creation of a stand-alone consumer protection agency as a central element of the plan to remake regulation of the financial system.

In hopes of quick congressional approval of a reform bill, White House officials are opening the door to compromise with lawmakers concerned about creating a new bureaucracy, according to congressional and some administration sources.
